CHAPTER THIRTEEN

AHNIYAH

Hearing the door to my cell open, I slowly sat up on my bed. My back was aching and I wasn't sure how I would do this with a growing belly.

"Come on, Ahniyah, you have a visit with your lawyer," CO Greene said as she stepped to the side to let me out.

"A lawyer? You sure it's for me?" I asked as we walked off to some rooms I hadn't been in before. Sitting down in the seat, I looked over to see an older Black man with a folder in his hand. His glasses sat on the bridge of his nose.

"Hello, I'm Mr. Haines. Messiah sent me here to represent you. I'm well aware of your charges and the basics of your case. I need you to start from the beginning, don't leave anything out. I will assure you now that I won't let anything pass me as far as evidence, and I cannot help you if you don't give me all the information I need," he started.

"Okay, so I was working for my mom, and then got into a fight with my little sister at the club because she swung on me when I was trying to help her. My mom then calls me and tells me I’m fired, and when I get home all my stuff was outside. I hadn't seen her since. My mom’s neighbor called me and informed me of her being in the hospital. I go to see her and they come in and cuff me, saying I'm arrested. I haven't talked to no one or anything, so I don't really know what's going to happen." I started wiping my tears as they fell.

"Okay, do you have any messages, phone calls, anything between y'all?” he asked.

"Well, I don't have my phone, they do. They took it when they locked me up. I texted her every day since she fired me, which is how I don't get how I could just be locked up for nothing." I was trying to hold it together but the more I talked about it, the more hurt I felt.

Brick sending a lawyer for me was nice; however, I couldn't help but to think about if this was the same lawyer he had helping this bitch Jalyn. My mind quickly went off that. This man could help whoever he wanted long as he got me out this bitch. Mr. Haines grabbed up his paperwork and his book with the notes he was taking. He stood up, shook my hand, and promised to be back before my court date, which I learned was in two months. Now that I knew I would have two more months in here, I told myself to focus on what I needed to do and not just sit around waiting for days to pass me by. I knew I was doing some time whether it was short or long. Standing up, I was cuffed and led back to my cell.

When I entered the room, what little I did have was scattered all over the place and Tiny was trying to pick her things up.
